How Costa Mesa ADU Builders Was Born in Costa Mesa
In 2012, we were standing in a backyard on the east side of Costa Mesa, looking at a foundation that had been poured three inches out of square. The homeowner, a retired teacher, had already paid for the concrete, the forms, the inspection that failed, and now the crew that did the work had stopped answering their phone. She wasn’t angry so much as exhausted. She’d done everything she was told to do: hired someone with a license, signed a contract, paid the deposit. And still, the whole thing had gone sideways, and the city wouldn’t let anything proceed until the slab was fixed. That afternoon, we tore out the bad pour and started over at our own cost, because it was the only thing that made sense. Other companies we’d worked with would have walked away, or billed her for the redo, or blamed the concrete supplier. We decided, standing in that backyard with dust on our boots and a homeowner watching from the patio, that we’d never be one of those companies. That’s where Costa Mesa ADU Builders started. Not in a boardroom. In a failed slab we promised to make right.
We didn’t launch with a grand strategy. We launched with a simple read of the industry as we’d experienced it from inside: too many contractors treated ADUs like a side hustle, a quick job between remodels. Homeowners got vague quotes, surprise change orders, and work that barely met code. In Costa Mesa, with its older lots and varied setbacks and a planning department that actually reads your drawings, that sloppiness gets punished. We knew we could do better, and we started doing it one project at a time.
Our Founder’s Personal Connection to the ADU Trade
We didn’t grow up dreaming about accessory dwelling units. We grew up around tools, around the smell of fresh lumber and the chalky dust of drywall, around people who fixed things because that’s what you did when something broke. Our introduction to construction came early, watching someone who took real pride in a straight line, a tight joint, a door that closed without dragging. It wasn’t a classroom. It was a driveway, a garage, a jobsite after school. And that’s the part that stuck: the satisfaction of building something with your hands and standing back at the end of the day to see it. Not a screen. Not a report. A wall. A window. A roof with a straight ridge line.
ADUs came later, but they felt like the thing we’d been looking for. A whole house on a smaller scale. All the parts that matter: foundation, framing, plumbing, electrical, a kitchen where someone will make coffee, a bedroom where someone will sleep. When you finish an ADU, you’ve built a home. Not a room addition. Not a patio cover. A place where a parent can live near their adult kids, or an adult kid can afford to stay in Costa Mesa instead of moving to a cheaper county. That matters to us in a way that other projects never did. We’ve done this work for over a decade now, and the part that still gets us out of bed at 7:00 AM is the same as it was in 2012: the concrete honesty of building something that has to stand up to the sun, the inspections, and the people who live inside it.
If we weren’t doing this, we’d probably still be building something. Maybe a shop. Maybe a house for family. We don’t know how to turn off the part of us that wants to make things square and true. ADUs let us do that work in the place we know best, for people who live fifteen minutes away and see us at the hardware store and stop to ask how their neighbor’s project turned out. It’s not a transaction. It’s a trade, and we’re proud to be in it.
Meet Our Team – The Person Behind Every Job
At the center of Costa Mesa ADU Builders is the owner and founder, who has spent more than a decade in the building trade, working his way through every phase of residential construction before committing to ADUs as his focus. He holds the licensing and insurance required by the state of California, and he’s the kind of person who wants to see the job with his own eyes, not just review photos from a desk. His training is practical, the kind you earn on jobsites and through years of fixing problems before they become expensive, and he’s built his reputation in Costa Mesa by treating every project with the same care he’d give his own home. Outside of work, he’s a father, a local, someone who believes a handshake should mean something. He’s personally committed to making sure every ADU we build is done right, because his name is on the line, and he doesn’t take that lightly.
Our Promise to Costa Mesa Homeowners
Our promise to homeowners in Costa Mesa is built on the things we wished every contractor did. First, honest pricing. We write it down, line by line, before work starts. No change orders that triple the cost. No vague “allowances” that turn into surprise invoices. If something changes, you’ll know before it happens, not after. Second, quality materials and workmanship. We don’t build with junk to pad a margin. We build with the stuff that lasts, because we drive past these ADUs for years after they’re done, and we don’t want to wince. Third, we stand behind our work. If something isn’t right, we come back and make it right. That’s not a marketing line. That’s the way we’ve run things since that slab in 2012, and we’re not about to change it now.
Our Credentials
- State-licensed – every pro working under our name is required to hold the license their state requires for the work being done.
- Insured & bonded – every pro working under our name is required to carry the insurance and bonding their state requires.
- Local experience – we’ve been building in Costa Mesa since 2012, and we know the local planning department, the common objections, and the neighborhoods.
- Strong local reputation – our business has grown through referrals from homeowners and neighbors who saw the work happen in real time.
Why do these matter to a homeowner? Because you’re inviting people onto your property, around your family, and into your largest personal investment. If something goes wrong, you want a company that has the paperwork in order and the experience to back it up. A license means there’s accountability. Insurance protects you if property is damaged. Local experience means we’ve navigated Costa Mesa’s specific regulations before, and we won’t be learning on your lot. Reputation means you can ask around and hear the same answer from the people who hired us.
Rooted in Costa Mesa
We’re a Costa Mesa company, not a brand that parachutes in from another county. We know the difference between Mesa Verde and Eastside, the streets off Harbor and the neighborhoods tucked behind Fairview Park. We’ve built ADUs that let parents stay close to their kids near Orange Coast College, and we’ve worked with homeowners who wanted extra income from a rental unit without leaving the neighborhood they’ve lived in for thirty years. When we say we’re local, we mean we’re here: at the permit counter, at the lumberyard, driving past projects we finished years ago on the way to our next one. This is our place, too.
